We are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and Dorset Independent Photographers founder Tim Edwards, who died in September 2023 after a long battle with COPD. Tim co-founded DIP in the 80s. This small group, its size dependent on the number of photographers who could sit comfortably in a room and look at photographs, has had quite a few members in the interim 40 years. Tim was there throughout all of this, a real achievement. The most important part of the evening is the sharing and critiquing of each other’s work. What everybody craved was a seal of approval of their work from Tim. More often than not “Not for me” is what you heard from him. This would be justified with a fair and detailed critique. Those familiar with Tim’s work will be aware of his ability to produce superb abstract landscapes from the most mundane objects.
In Tim's own words:
I have been involved in making photographs since 1978 and I am primarily self taught. Photographers Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Weston, Minor White and Aaron Siskind are major cornerstones however painters Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, Howard Hodgkin and Gerhard Richter are influential in my image making. From 1980 until 2007 for the most part I worked in the landscape genre responding to areas where there was evidence of human activity. In 2008 the discovery of health issues I took the decision to forgo the traditional darkroom and adapted to digital capture. This enabled me to pursue confidently colour imagery, competently. I pursue colour opportunities in the urban mainly, photographing to allow an area or situation to unfold. I am a co-founder of DIP’s and have enjoyed exhibiting nationally in group and solo shows. My work is in collections in this country and abroad. I have published books ‘Paris six days one summer’ through Blurb and ‘Surfaces & Photographs privately.
